Legal Intelligence Pty Ltd ACN 686 281 569 (“Legal Intelligence”, “we”, “us”, “our”) provides access to the Law Tram platform at lawtram.com.au. This Privacy Policy outlines our obligations regarding your personal information in connection with your use of that platform.
The Law Tram platform is owned and operated by Internet Law Pty Ltd ACN 130 464 574 as trustee (“Law Tram”). Law Tram acts as a technical service provider and data processor to Legal Intelligence. All user-facing services, communications, and data responsibilities rest solely with Legal Intelligence.
This policy also applies to all subdomains of lawtram.com.au and other websites and digital services operated by Legal Intelligence Pty Ltd (ACN 686 281 569) unless stated otherwise.
We comply with the Australian Privacy Principles (APPs) contained in the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) and apply these principles to our collection, use, disclosure, storage, and protection of your personal information.
Legal Intelligence determines the purposes and means of processing personal information you provide through the Law Tram platform. Law Tram acts solely as a data processor, handling information under the instruction of Legal Intelligence for the limited purpose of delivering platform functionality and related integrations.
Legal Partners engage with Law Tram under separate commercial agreements. Law Tram may collect and store information relating to Legal Partners (such as contact details, ABNs, billing records, payment history, and correspondence) as part of that relationship.
Additionally, Law Tram may, under separate commercial arrangements with certain legal practice software providers (such as Smokeball), access information stored within those systems. This may include data relating to matters submitted by users via the Law Tram platform, including matter summaries, documents, or billing records.
Such access is governed by those agreements and is limited to information relevant to matters referred through the platform. Law Tram does not access or use that data for any purpose other than operating and monitoring the platform’s functionality and facilitating administrative and compliance support.
Personal Information is data that identifies an individual. We may collect the following information:
Names, addresses, email addresses, phone and facsimile numbers
Information you provide when creating or interacting with a legal brief
Information submitted via AI-based chat or forms
Invoice and billing information
Documents and correspondence from Legal Partners (if shared)
Information accessed via third-party software integrations (see Clause 5)
This information may be collected via our platform, from your use of our forms or chatbot, or through your Legal Partner’s practice management system.
We are not responsible for the privacy policies or data handling of any third-party sites linked from the platform.
We collect, hold, use, and disclose personal information for the following purposes:
To provide our services to you (including compiling a legal brief)
To support your use of the Law Tram platform
To comply with legal or regulatory obligations
For administrative, operational, compliance, and audit functions
To communicate with you regarding your matter or account
Where permitted by law, we may also use your personal information for related purposes that you would reasonably expect.
Legal Intelligence may, through its data processor Law Tram, access information held in the practice management systems of Legal Partners. In some cases, Law Tram may have direct access to these systems via commercial agreements with third-party providers (such as Smokeball).
This access may include:
Uploaded documents
Billing records and payment information
Correspondence and system metadata
This information is used only for operational, compliance, audit, and platform functionality purposes, and only where the matter has been initiated or facilitated through the Law Tram platform. Law Tram does not use this information for marketing or profiling and adheres to confidentiality obligations under its agreements with software providers and Legal Partners.
We use AI technologies (such as ChatGPT) certified under CCPA, GDPR, SOC2, and SOC3 standards. Our platform implements SSL encryption and other security protocols for transmission and storage.
Where we access information via third-party integrations, such as APIs into law firm systems, additional protections are applied. Law Tram, as our processor, also maintains data protection safeguards.
Your personal information may be disclosed to:
Legal Partners (where you provide consent)
Law Tram (acting as our processor only)
Regulators or law enforcement where legally required
Contractors, auditors, and technology service providers acting under obligation of confidentiality
We will never sell your data to third parties.
We store your information in secure environments and take reasonable steps to prevent unauthorised access, loss, misuse, or disclosure.
In the event of a notifiable data breach, we will notify affected users and the appropriate regulator as required by law.
You may request access to the personal information we hold about you by contacting us in writing. We may require proof of identity before releasing the data. No charge applies for making a request, though administrative fees may apply for copies.
